Dam liners prevent unwanted seepage and pollution

All of our dam liners are packaged on a heavy duty core and are heavily protected to ensure no damage occurs during transport. Instructions are included as a separate flyer with indicative marks on the liner to show which direction to roll out the liner. Dam liners prevent unwanted seepage and pollution, making them ideal for situations where the liquid contained may contaminate the ground water.

Where farm animals or even wild animals make use of the dam, you will take measures to ensure the animals do not damage the liner. There are two basic ways to do this. The most preferable way is to erect a fence around the dam and pump water to a trough. Otherwise the liner should be covered by geotextile and at least 300 mm of gravel whereever an animal can walk in the dam.

Quality Dam Liner Provide Long Life - Dam Liners

Dams are valuable resources on farm, being the source of water to feed livestock and provide irrigation for crops. A common misconception people have is that if a dam leaks, it probably wasn't built properly and a cheap dam liner can be utilised to fix the problem. However it is much more complex and soil conditions determine how the dam is to be initially constructed. Ideally a dam is build on a clay based soil, any other soil to some degree will leak. The worst soils are sandy, loam based soils and shale rock soils, as these will leak the most. Dams are then made with either a clay or bentonite layer and the use of things like dam liners is uncommon as the cost is higher. Dam liner are only employed where other sealing techniques have failed, but can guarantee that no further leaking will occur.

Measuring your Dam for a Dam Liner

Measuring your Dam for a Dam Liner

Even though many dams can sometimes be large or irregular, fitting your dam with a liner is not too difficult. Apart from site preparation, you will also need to make sure your order enough liner such that it will fit properly.
Measuring Your Dam

"The correct dam liner size is essential”

But don't order too much as that makes it more expensive than necessary. This then means you have to measure the dam area properly.

There are only a couple of factors that need to be looked at when working out how much dam liner you will need, but these are quite often are overlooked. When seeking a quote, make sure the following have been factored in:
  • Accurate depth of the dam. It is important that you measure the maximum depth of the dam as accurately as possible. It is our experience that many people tend to guess and over estimate the depth of a dam.
  • The anchor trench. Generally the bigger and deeper the dam, the wider, deeper and further away you will need the anchor trench to be.
  • Width of the dam wall. Larger and deeper dams also require a wider dam wall to properly secure the dam liner.
  • The slope of the dam walls. Generally dam walls are made between a 1:3 and a 1:1 gradient. A 1:3 gradient is the most common as the machinery used to dig out the dam can't usually cope with anything steeper. A steeper dam wall will mean that more dam liner will be needed.
  • The shape of the dam. While a dam liner can be made to almost any shape, it is generally not cost effective as labour rates can be more expensive than material costs.
